Springfield Women Summer Results
By: Smac23
Body:

The Springfield Women Rifles had another strong showing at the 2012 summer tournaments.  They kicked off the summer with their own Eric White Memorial 7s tournament.  The convenience of hosting the tournament allowed them to place two teams in the tournament, one in the social division and one in the open division.  The social team, which was a mix of experience and inexperience, had to face some strong competition, but they pulled wins versus Worcester and Ithaca in order to secure the bowl championship.  The open team, which include a little more experience in their line up, suffered one loss to a top teir Portland team, allowing them run away with the plate.

The following weekend, the Springfield Women travelled to Worcester with one team.  Having a lot of experience and speed created a winning record in pool play, posting strong wins against, Worcester, WPI, and the Falcons, with their only loss coming from a match versus Boston Women, losing by only 7 points.  This allowed the team to make it to the Women's Championship match.  The women again had to face the very strong Boston team.  This time, defense really came into play, but in the end the Springfield Women came up short, losing in a very close game, 10-14, placing them second overall in the women's tournament.

For the final tournament of the season, the Springfield Women travelled to Acton, MA for the well known Acton 10s tournament hosted by Old Gold.  All the women's teams entered into the tournament were entered into 4 pools of 3 teams.  In pool play the Springfield Women competed against Hartford and Beantown.  Starting off the day they posted a score of 20-0 versus Hartford, this gave them confidence going into their second game.  They then took their great offense and defense into their second gaming posting a score of 26-0 versus Beantown.  The team had a lot of down time before the brackets came out, but when they finally did, the Springfield Women were placed as the 3rd place seed in the Cup bracket.  Their first round match was versus Providence.  It was a big defensive match, allowing the game to be scoreless for much of it, but finally they broke through Providence's defense and put 7 points up on the board.  The game finished 7-0 in favor of the Springfield Women.  This carried them into the semi-finals, where they would have to face North Shore, who posted a lot of impressive scores in their previous matches.  The Springfield Women came out strong, and overtook North Shore 14-0, but the long day and limited subs started taking a toll on Springfield.  They allowed North Shore to score twice in the second half, however, North Shore wasn't able to convert one of their kicks, allowing Springfield to come out on top 14-12.  This placed Springfield into the Women's Chamionship match, versus the youthful and enduring Falcons' team.  A mixture of fatigue, injuries, and good play from the Falcons put the Falcons on top.  The Springfield women were happy to take second place, but never satisfied.

This summer established the Springfield Women as one of the top teams in the Northeast.  They look forward to the fall season, and would really like to grow their roster.  Feel free to contact the team, no experience necessary.

Middlesex 7's Results
By: Nick Lata
Body:

The men's team will likely walk away from this tournament with mixed emotions.  The Rifles young inexperienced side competed fiercely with several high profile teams in what was the first 7's tournament of most of the Rifles players 7's careers.  On the other hand the Rifles were just a few favorable bounces away from being 3-1 and the surprise of the tournament.

Springfield 15, Worcester 15

A massive traffic jam nearly forced the Rifles to forfeit their first game against Worcester.  Having literally sprinted from the parking lot to the playing field, the boys naturally came out of the gates slowly against Worcester.  A hard-running Worcester side punched in two easy tries in the first half before the Rifles finally kicked it into gear.  A furious comeback, highlighted by a series of thundering runs from Nick Nesserella, would even the game up late in the second half.  Only a try being held up by a phantom defender (as seen by the referee from midfield) would stand between the Rifles and victory.  The Rifles had a noticable speed advantage in this one, but repeatedly took the ball into contact which played right into Worcester's strength.  Worcester's impressive performances later in the tournament made the Rifles feel better about what initially felt an awful lot like a missed opportunity.

Springfield 0, Middlesex 38

In the second game of the day, the Rifles faced Middlesex's qualifier side which may literally be the best 7's team in the nation.  Seldom can you say there is no shame in losing a game by 38 points, but this was an extremely talented side that has beaten opponents by an average of nearly 60 points per game this summer.  Despite the lopsided final score, the Rifles defense was very solid for a long stretch in the second half.  John Leydon and Anthony Stork left it all on the field in this one, with Stork making a spectacular try saving tackle on a Middlesex breakaway late in the game.

Springfield 19, UCONN 19

Similar to the first game, the third game was a tale of two halves.  The Rifles initially fell behind 19-5 to a fast and fit UConn side that was looking to make a track meet out of it.  A second half rally was sparked by break away runs and strong tackling from Brian Costello and Tim Goodale, who were probably the Rifles' most valuable players throughout the day.  Just as the floodgates were starting to open, the whistle blew and another tie was in the books.

Springfield 17, Nairobi Exiles 19

In the knockout round, the Rifles squared off against the Nairobi Exiles.  The Rifles came out firing in this one and jumped all over the Kenyans with an early 19-5 lead, showing marked improvements in all aspects of the game.  The highlight of this one was a tremendous individual performance from Luca Mineo, who finally appeared to be settling down in what was his first day playing flyhalf.  Within less than a minute's time he single-handedly manufactured a spectacular try, followed by a bone-crunching hit on the ensuing kickoff.  Andrew Eggleston added a nice break away run and seemed to be everywhere on the field all day long.  Late in the second half, the Rifles' players fatigue became obvious, while the Kenyans never missed a beat.  A break away try off of a picked off pass tied it up as time expired and the conversion put the Exiles ahead 19-17.

The young Rifles side may have gone home without any hardware, but confidence is running high heading into next week's Springfield 7's tournament.  The 12 man 7's side features 8 players under the age of 25, including 4 rookies to the game.  What they lack in experience, they make up for in athleticism and intensity.  I encourage friends, family and former players to come out and watch this new look Springfield 7's side this weekend in Holyoke.

- Nick
